Intrusive thoughts

Therapy for intrusive thoughts

For adults troubled by unwanted thoughts and images that feel out of character and are hard to say out loud.

Many people have thoughts like these and never tell anyone. Nathan will not be shocked, will not judge you and will tell you how he works before you say a word.

  • Say it your way

You choose the words and how much to share. Nathan listens first.

  • Know the limits

Before anything else, Nathan explains what is private and the few situations in which he must act.

  • Practice, step by step

Together you plan small steps to stop avoiding what sets the thoughts off.

The method, and what it is not

How the work is done

  • The method

Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a form of cognitive behavioral therapy: you practice letting a thought be there without arguing with it, checking it or hiding from it.

  • What this is not

Not a judgment of who you are. An unwanted thought is not the same as an urge to act. If you have an urge or a plan to hurt yourself or someone else, call or text 988, or call 911.

  • Length and pace

Sessions run 50 minutes, usually weekly at first. Nathan sets the pace with you and does not promise a number of sessions or a result.

  • How it is paid

You pay for each session yourself, and Nathan gives you the fee in writing before you start. A monthly receipt is available if your plan reimburses out-of-network care.

Questions

Three questions people ask

What if my thoughts are about harming someone?

Nathan will explain how he works and where confidentiality ends before you say anything. An unwanted thought is not the same as an urge to act.

Do I have to describe the thoughts in detail?

No. Many people start with a short summary. Detail comes only if and when it helps, and you decide.

Will you tell anyone what I say?

We keep your records private and share them only as the law allows. Nathan explains the limits in writing before you start.

Would you like to talk it through first?

A 15-minute call is a way to see whether we fit. It is not therapy, an evaluation or an assessment.
